In terms of matching music with the environment/situation/etc, the could have taken a page or two from Valkyria Chronicles' book. Maybe it's not so bad if you're using melee but for ranged, it's seriously god awful. Not being able to change targets except to the closest one is seriously annoying as fuck. Sight-out (Blindside for you guys?) is a neat concept and definitely helps bolster your bonus board since the firs strike afterwards is a crit but aside from that, it doesn't feel too exciting or fun. I'm not much of a fan of this half-assed design which does neither that well. I liked ToV's system which felt much closer to an action game with the cancels, combo chaining, etc and I liked WKC's system which was pretty much a true turn based lect a command and go. In addition, some areas in the map which don't appear to be graphically intensive appear to suffer some occasional drops in framerates.īattle system is interesting but it feels like an action system shoehorned into a turn based system and quite frankly, it just feels like I'm spamming the A button most of the time (using Reimi.that might be why?) with the occasional trigger pulls.
As someone mentioned, immediately after a battle cuts back into the field map, there's some framerate issues there. Noticeable framerate drops in battle (I thought I read a few places saying that battles were 60fps locked.) when things get busy and effects are going off. Space scenes are pretty damn nice, but with the char models, there's a quality mismatch between the characters and inside Calnus.the ship is rather simply textured and this clashes with the character models imho. Cut scenes are a notch above the rest of the game but the framerate slowdown is pretty annoying and even if you can ignore the drop in framerate, the overall quality is all over the place.

The lighting is a double edged sword with some scenes, particularly water heavy scenes, looking rather magnificent and other scenes looking totally washed out and unsaturated creating a sensation that you're watching something on an 1st generation color TV set.low saturation and limited color palette.
Graphically, it has its moments especially with the lighting, but for the most part it feels rather average. Part of it may be due to the fact that I ended up paying close to double what the US price was but regardless. I'm going to buck the trend a little (a lot?) and say that SO4 is a pretty disappointing title.
